Are you a love addict?
Sometimes we hang onto a relationship at all costs and often hurt ourselves, both health wise and emotionally. This is a sign of love addiction. We can literally love ourselves to death.
Most adults have equal and balanced relationships and are able to leave a connection if it becomes unhealthy or abusive. However, a love addict is likely to cling on for dear life as the connection simulates a childhood desire for bonding and security.
Children who are exposed to a lack of parental nurturing may grow up lacking in self esteem and be hungry for love. This in turn predisposes them to become love addicts as adults or to become easily obsessed with someone who holds for them the promise of "living happily ever after.” The addiction is very real and recovery programmes are available to help develop detachment and self love. Recovery for love addiction is about facing and healing the wounds of childhood, building self esteem and ending relationships when they are abusive. This is still a long process but allows us to be able to have balanced and equal relationships based not on fear but on mutual respect and love.
